Board Governance Assessment Tool

Instructions: This quick assessment can be completed by the CEO and/or Board Chair to identify the strengths and development areas for your organization’s governance process.

Do you have a process (e.g. a written job description and/or Board manual) to ensure that all Board members have a consistent understanding of their roles/responsibilities?
Is your Board and Organization operating in full compliance with your By-Laws?
Are you confident that (at least) 80% of your Board members can articulate the organization’s vision and achievements to the community?
Can you identify ways in which your Board members demonstrate that they are proud to be an active and passionate member of this Board?
Did your Board, through committee or as a whole, provide significant input and guidance in developing your organization’s strategic plan?
Did your Board, through committee or as a whole, provide timely and effective annual performance feedback to the CEO?
Do all Board Members actively participated in your fundraising activities through personal gifts and attracting new donors?
Does your Board have a leadership succession plan for the CEO and future Board positions?
Are your Board and committee meetings productive, action-oriented, and mission-focused?
Do you have a well-defined process to appoint (and, when appropriate, terminate) Board membership?
